Our patient named Arda M. applied to our clinic because he was not satisfied with his current dental appearance and wanted to have a more organized, more aesthetic and more complete smile. In the first evaluation, it was seen that there were previously made veneers especially in the upper jaw, these veneers lost their aesthetic integrity over time and that the teeth could be made more harmonious in terms of form, color and alignment during the smile.

Our patient's expectation was not only to have whiter teeth. A natural but distinct smile design that looks stronger, is compatible with the lip structure, supports the masculine facial expression was aimed. Therefore, while preparing the treatment plan, old crowns, the current condition of the teeth, x-ray findings, the need for root canal treatment, gum health and bite relationship were evaluated together.

Treatment of Arda M 04.09.2025 started on 20.09.2025 was completed on During this process, our patient Misyondent received a total of He came 6 times.

Before and After Zirconia Dental Crown Replacement

    Applied Treatments

During this treatment process, the following procedures were applied to our patient:

    • 22 zirconium crowns
    • 6 root canal treatments
    • Detertraj / scaling
    • 12 old pavement removal

The priority in this planning was the controlled removal of the existing old veneers and the reevaluation of the teeth both from a health and aesthetic point of view. After the old veneers were removed, the underlying tooth tissues, the areas in need of root canal treatment and the infrastructure suitable for restoration were examined in detail.

    Patient's Initial Condition

After the Replacement of Old Zirconia Dental Crowns 2

When Arda M. came to our clinic, he had previous veneers in his mouth. Although these veneers provided integrity in the smile line, they did not meet our patient's expectations in terms of color, form and aesthetic harmony over time.

In the initial photograph, it can be seen that the old restorations in the upper anterior region dominate the smile and a more modern and balanced design is needed in the overall appearance of the teeth. Our patient wanted a cleaner, more organized and stronger smile.

At this point, the treatment was not only considered as "renewing old veneers". Because the health status of the teeth under the old veneers, current oral hygiene, gum harmony and the need for root canal treatment were also important for the success of the treatment.

    Initial Examination and X-ray Evaluation

A panoramic X-ray evaluation was performed before treatment started. X-rays were evaluated for existing old crowns, tooth roots, supporting tissues, missing tooth areas and general oral structure before treatment.

This stage is especially important for patients who are planning comprehensive zirconium veneers. Because in veneer renewal treatments, not only the visible tooth surface but also the tooth tissue under the veneer should be taken into consideration.

In the evaluation made for Arda M., it was determined that some teeth needed root canal treatment. For this reason, the necessary infrastructure treatments were planned before proceeding to the aesthetic restoration phase. Thus, it was aimed to make new zirconium veneers on a healthier foundation.

Why were the old coatings removed?

In our patient, the total 12 pieces of old veneer were in place. The main reason for removing the old veneers was the need to re-evaluate the existing restorations, both aesthetically and clinically.

Over time, old veneers may develop color incompatibility, malformations, problems with gum compatibility or the need for treatment of the underlying tooth tissue. For this reason, it is not enough to evaluate veneers only according to their appearance.

During this process, old crowns were removed in a controlled manner. Then the condition of the underlying teeth was examined and it was determined which teeth needed root canal treatment, which areas needed restorative support and which areas needed a more aesthetic form.

    Why 22 Zirconium Veneers Preferred?

In this treatment plan 22 zirconium crowns was applied because the need for both aesthetic integrity and functional durability were considered together.

Zirconium veneers are a preferable option due to their durability, aesthetic appearance close to natural tooth color and the integrity they provide in large restoration plans. In the planning for Arda M., the aim was to make not only the upper anterior region but also all areas visible during the smile more balanced.

Replacing only a few teeth, especially in cases where old veneers are renewed, can create incompatibility in terms of color and form. For this reason, a more comprehensive zirconium planning was made by evaluating the smile line and intraoral bite relationship together.

As a result, our patient's tooth form became more prominent, her smile line more organized and her overall appearance more complete.

6 Why was root canal treatment performed?

    Arda M. - X-ray

One of the most important issues in veneer treatment is to make the restoration on a healthy dental substructure. In the evaluation for Arda M. 6 teeth need root canal treatment detected.

Root canal treatment can be applied in cases where there is a problem in the internal tissue of the tooth or where it needs to be supported before restoration. The aim is to protect the tooth in the mouth and to ensure that the crown is planned on a healthier basis.

For this reason, root canal treatments were not considered as a separate part of the aesthetic process, but as one of the basic preparation stages of the treatment. After the necessary root canal treatments were completed, the zirconium coating stage was started.

Why was Detertraj Included in the Treatment Plan?

During the treatment process, our patient also underwent detertraj, i.e. scaling. This procedure is especially important for better evaluation of gum health before veneers and smile design.

Tartar and plaque accumulation can make it difficult to read the gum line correctly. However, in restorations such as zirconium veneers, gum harmony is very important for the aesthetic result to look natural.

For this reason, detertraj procedure was included in the treatment plan to regulate oral hygiene, support gingival health and ensure a healthier progress of the impression/proofing stages before starting the restorations.

    How was Smile Design Planned?

In the smile design prepared for Arda M., a more masculine, clearer and stronger tooth form was aimed. When designing a smile for male patients, care should be taken not to make the teeth look too round, too small or too artificial.

Therefore, the following criteria were considered together in the design:

    • The relationship of the teeth to the lips
    • The amount of teeth visible during a smile
    • Length and width ratios of the front teeth
    • Differences in form created by old pavements
    • General view of the gum line
    • Lower and upper jaw closure relationship
    • Color and surface character of zirconium veneers
    • Facial expression and general appearance of the patient

The aim was to give our patient a more harmonious, clean, organized and aesthetically stronger smile.

How did the treatment process progress?

After Replacing Old Zirconia Dental Crowns

The treatment process was planned in several stages.

In the first stage, an intraoral examination, photographic records and panoramic X-ray evaluation were performed. Then the existing old veneers were examined and the restorations that needed to be removed were identified.

In the second stage, the old crowns were removed in a controlled manner. At this stage, the current condition of the teeth was evaluated and the teeth requiring root canal treatment were identified.

In the third stage, root canal treatment was applied to 6 teeth. After the necessary infrastructure procedures were completed, scaling was performed and gum health was prepared for the restoration process.

In the next stage, preparation, impression, rehearsal and color-form evaluations were made for zirconium veneers. Final restorations were planned taking into account the patient's facial structure, lip line and aesthetic expectations.

In the last stage, 22 zirconium veneers were applied and the treatment was completed.

How Many Times Has Our Patient Visited Misyondent?

Arda M.'s treatment process was planned as removal of old crowns, oral hygiene, completion of root canal treatments, zirconium crown preparation, rehearsal stages and final finishing. In this process, our patient received a total of Misyondent He came 6 times.

Thanks to this planning, the condition of the teeth under the old veneers was evaluated in a controlled manner, teeth requiring root canal treatment were treated and the form, color, bite and patient satisfaction were checked step by step before the new zirconium veneers were permanently applied.

1st appointment: Removal of Old Coatings and Initial Assessment

At the first appointment, the patient's existing old veneers were removed in a controlled manner. After the old veneers were removed, the actual condition of the underlying teeth was evaluated more clearly.

This stage is particularly important because decay, discoloration, loss of material, problems with gum compatibility or the need for root canal treatment may occur under the old veneers. In Arda M.'s treatment, after the old restorations were removed, the current condition of the teeth was examined in detail and the treatment plan was clarified accordingly.

2nd Appointment: Start of Deterting and Root Canal Treatments

At the second appointment, oral hygiene was supported with detertraj, i.e. scaling. This was important so that the new zirconium veneers could be planned in a healthier gingival environment.

At the same appointment, the treatment of teeth that needed root canal treatment was started. Total for Arda M. 6 root canal treatment planned. Root canal treatments were included in the treatment process in order to prepare the teeth to be coated with zirconium on a healthier infrastructure.

3rd Appointment: Completion of Root Canal Treatments, Tooth Cutting and Digital Impression

At the third appointment, the remaining stages of root canal treatments were completed. Thus, situations that may pose a risk of pain, sensitivity or infection in the teeth that will remain under the crown were taken under control.

At the same appointment, the teeth were prepared for zirconium crowns and digital impressions were taken. Tooth cutting is the controlled preparation stage for the zirconium veneers to fit correctly on the teeth. The digital impression allows the teeth to be recorded in three dimensions with intraoral scanners and helps the laboratory process to proceed in a more controlled manner.

4th Appointment: Plastic / PMMA Proofing

Fourth date PMMA proofing is done. At this stage, the patient does not receive the final zirconium, but draft teeth made of plastic material.

Thanks to the PMMA fitting, our patient was able to see the overall size, length, width and smile line of her new teeth before the permanent procedure.

At this stage, the following details were particularly considered:

    • Is the size of the teeth compatible with the face and lip structure?
    • Does the smile line look natural?
    • Are zirconium veneers perceived as too big or artificial?
    • Is the upper and lower jaw appearance balanced?
    • Does the patient approve the new smile form?

The PMMA proofing allows the necessary adjustments to be made to the design before proceeding to the final zirconias.

    5th appointment: Dentin Proofing

Fifth date dentin proofing made. At this stage, no more plastic drafts, but real zirconium restorations before polishing and final polishing were tried in the mouth.

Dentin rehearsal is one of the most important control stages before final finishing. Because in this appointment, the color, form, harmony with the gums, bite relationship and the result that the patient sees in the mirror are evaluated together.

At this stage, we looked in particular at the following points:

    • Is the color of zirconium veneers compatible with the patient's expectations?
    • Is the form of the teeth balanced with the facial structure and lip line?
Do the restoration borders with the gum look natural?
    • Is there any disturbing contact at closing?
    • Does the patient confirm the result before final bonding?
    • Do you need a little editing before finishing?

Thanks to the dentin proofing, final aesthetic and functional checks are completed before permanent bonding.

6th appointment: Finishing and Permanent Bonding

At the sixth appointment, the finishing phase began. This is the final control and permanent bonding phase of the treatment.

Since the necessary controls were completed after the dentin fitting, the final state of the zirconium veneers was evaluated at this appointment. Color, form, bite, gingival harmony and the patient's aesthetic approval were checked again.

When everything went according to plan and the patient approved of her new smile, the zirconium veneers were permanently bonded.

After all stages of Arda M.'s treatment were completed 22 zirconium crowns permanently applied. Thus, the irregular appearance, color incompatibility and form problems due to old veneers were renewed with a more balanced, more aesthetic and more complete smile planning.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Do old coatings always have to be removed?

No. Whether old veneers will be removed or not is determined according to clinical examination and x-ray evaluation. If the veneers have color incompatibility, fractures, edge incompatibility, gum problems or the underlying tooth needs treatment, renewal can be planned.

What to do after removing old coatings?

After the old veneers are removed, the underlying tooth tissues are evaluated. The teeth are checked for decay, sensitivity, need for root canal treatment or loss of support. Afterwards, new veneers are planned according to the patient's needs.

    Why is zirconium crown preferred?

Zirconium crowns can be preferred for their durability, aesthetic appearance and integrity in large restoration plans. Especially in cases where many teeth are planned together, it can provide advantages in terms of color and form harmony.

Can zirconium coating be applied after root canal treatment?

Yes. Zirconium crowns can be applied to teeth after root canal treatment, depending on the condition of the tooth. The important thing here is that the tooth is properly prepared for restoration and the treatment plan is determined individually by the physician.

Why is detergency performed before veneer treatment?

Detertraj ensures the removal of calculus and plaque accumulations. Regulating gum health before veneer treatment helps the impression and rehearsal stages to proceed more healthily. Gum harmony is important for aesthetic restorations to look natural.

Will this result be the same for everyone?

No. Each patient's tooth structure, previous restoration status, gum health, bite relationship and aesthetic expectations are different. Therefore, the treatment plan and the result may vary from person to person. This content shows the personalized treatment process prepared for Arda M.

What kind of change was achieved as a result of the treatment?

When the treatment was completed, our patient's smile became more distinct, more organized and more aesthetic. Instead of the dull and incompatible appearance created by the old veneers, the form and color of the teeth were made more complete.

In the final photo, it can be seen that the teeth are more evenly placed on the smile line, the upper and lower jaw appearance has become more harmonious and the overall smile expression looks cleaner, more vibrant and stronger.

In this process, the goal was not only to provide our patient with new veneers, but also to create a comprehensive treatment plan that supports oral health while eliminating aesthetic problems caused by old restorations.

What Does This Treatment Process Show?

This treatment process for Arda M. is an important example showing that the replacement of old veneers is not only an aesthetic procedure.

When old veneers are removed, the condition of the underlying dental tissues should be re-evaluated. Some teeth may require root canal treatment, gum health can be regulated, oral hygiene can be supported and new veneers can be planned accordingly.

Therefore, the process of old veneer replacement treatments varies from person to person. In some patients, it may be sufficient to simply replace the veneers, while others may require root canal treatment, detertraj, gum reconstruction or other supportive procedures.

The plan created for Arda M. was prepared by evaluating our patient's existing veneers, intraoral condition, aesthetic expectations and functional needs together.
